Rotary marks 100 years at Mt Penang Gardens

Rotary is the world’s oldest service club and in 2005, the Centenary of Rotary was commemorated by the Combined Central Coast Rotary Clubs through a significant contribution to Mt Penang Gardens. Over $70,000 dollars was raised through the combined efforts of Central Coast Rotarians, for further enchancement of the regions newest gardens.

The history of Rotary began in Chicago Illinois in 1905, with Paul Harris, a young lawyer from Vermont developing the group with the motto “service above self”. This motto has served Rotary for 100 years, and people from all walks of life have benefited from the contributions that Rotary has made to their lives and organisations.

Today Rotary operates in 166 countries world wide.

The Combined Clubs of the Central Coast Rotary in conjunction with the Festival Development Corporation have dedicated the Puddle Garden at Mt Penang Gardens to celebrate this momentous occasion.

"The Corporation feels honoured that the world’s oldest service organisation has chosen the Central Coast’s most contemporary garden to commemorate this very special day” said Corporation Chairman David King.

The Combined Clubs of Rotary Central Coast have 14 clubs with over 380 members who voted on the Centenary project.

“The Puddle Garden at Mt Penang Gardens was a clear choice, as it has a stunning design; it is in one of the prime spots on the Central Coast and is family orientated. These are values that the clubs consider to be paramount in making their selection” said Graham Black, who was the project coordinator on behalf of the 14 clubs.
